SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE

The album cover design for Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George uses typography and symbolism to evoke the themes of both Sondheim’s narrative and Georges Seurat’s renowned painting style, pointillism. The project’s goal was to blend typographic hierarchy with visual symbolism, balancing text as an image with a clear, structured design that complements the musical’s depth. The final design, applied across the album cover, CD, and cassette, reflects the connection between Sondheim’s music and Seurat’s artistic legacy, emphasizing themes of creativity and the passage of time.

METICULOUS
POINTILISM

Inspired by Seurat’s iconic A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, the color palette was carefully pulled from the painting to mirror the musical’s ties to Seurat’s work. Dots serve as the design’s central motif, symbolizing Seurat’s meticulous pointillism and representing the layered nature of both Seurat and Sondheim’s artistry. The simplicity of the typography allows these dotted elements to stand out, providing a subtle nod to Seurat’s technique while preserving the harmony of the album’s overall visual structure.

MIRRORING
THEMES

Strategic use of negative space and dynamic paragraph styling invites viewers into a reflective experience, mirroring the contemplative themes of the musical. The spacious composition allows the thematic elements to breathe, giving prominence to the ideas central to both the artwork and narrative. By combining colors, textures, and minimalist typography, the design bridges Sondheim’s storytelling with Seurat’s visual world, transforming the album into a thoughtful homage to creativity and legacy that resonates with audiences and invites them into the layered beauty of both music and art.
